This course provides an understanding of how language, non-verbal behavior, and visual thinking are important for cognition and communication. It connects to the evolutionary and ontogenetic aspects of comparative cognition. You will learn a variety of methods for transcribing and analysing linguistic and non-verbal material. The course consist of several brief studies with focus on “what happens under different communication conditions”. With this, along with additional theories and models as a base, you will learn the essentials of how to build systems of humans and technologies that allow people to communicate as successfully as possible; and to develop their communication skills. In relation to the course cognition, interaction and design, there will be a special focus on demographic factors like cultural background, age, disability and cognitive style.
