Abstract

Knowledge in boxes

More and more of the information we deal with is located outside our heads. It is stored in different kinds of boxes: books, computers, CD-ROMs, etc. The question in focus is how the storage of information in external media affects our thinking. One consequence is that we need no longer strain our memory with detailed facts. On the other hand, the skill of seeking information becomes increasingly important.

Since there is often no guarantee that the information that is found on the Internet is reliable, we have to rely on our sound judgments when evaluating the information. We have to interpret information before it can be turned into useful knowledge. The search engines provide very little support for this task.

Internet is an information highway without road signs. Librarians, in the form of "cybrarians" can play an important role by developing more humanly oriented search tools for the information that is scattered all over cyberspace.
