Abstract
: The paper deals with a notorious problem in doxastic logic: to define a notion of belief that is not closed under logical consequence. A semantical analysis of belief ascriptions is suggested in terms of acquiring and discarding beliefs. This analysis is based on a variant of a certain epistemological position, namely doxastic voluntarism. The resulting formal representation avoids closure of belief under logical consequence without stipulating devices like arareness functions or non-normal possible worlds. Moreover, group beliefs fail to be closed under membership.
